Inside the Oxford Community Garden

Community gardens allow people the opportunity to help each other harvest produce and maintain one another's garden. In Oxford, MS, the Oxford Community Garden has established itself as the first community garden in the area. After seeing beautiful community gardens in Helsinki, Sweden and around the United States, local resident Susie Adams was motivated to bring communal gardening to Oxford.
Although the garden currently has a wait list on open lots, people are still encouraged to join and volunteer to help out around the garden. Registration through the Oxford Park Commission and a small fee is all that is required to join and once a member, one can actively participate in the process while waiting for a personal lot. The garden serves many purposes such as space to grow produce that can then be given to the needy. The garden is also completely organic which means that there are no chemicals used in the planting that harm either the soil or surrounding environment.
