The Oxford-Lafayette Humane Society "Planning For A Better Tomorrow"

The Oxford- Lafayette Humane Society has quite a few changes coming it's way. The Oxford-Lafayette Humane Society (OLHS) provides a critical service to the entire community surrounding Oxford and Lafayette County. OLHS accepts approximately 3500 animals a year.

To better service the animals of Oxford, the shelter plans to relocate to a new and improved facility. The facility will be air conditioned and provide more space and comfort for the animals living there. The new facility will be located between the Oxford airport and post office. OM Calling Center Works to Beat Budget Cuts

Budget cuts are affecting nearly every area of The University of Mississippi campus. However, a group of Ole Miss students, led by David Warner, are working to cushion the blow. The Ole Miss Calling Center, a branch of nationwide fundraising corporation RuffaloCODY, located in the Memory House on campus, call alumni, parents, and friends of the University nightly. Each call will, hopefully, end in a monetary pledge.

With a goal of $1 Million each year, the students have a huge impact on the experiences of Ole Miss students.Pledges range from $10 to thousands of dollars, and, no matter what size of gift, each one makes a difference to Ole Miss. The U.S. News and World Report looks at the number of donors, not the amount of donations, when ranking schools. This also encourages corporate donors to give more to the school.

Gifts go towards scholarships, financial aid, technology upgrades in the classrooms, faculty seminars, building renovations, and much more. So, after graduation, when your Caller ID flashes "University of Mississippi," be sure to pick up the phone and give.

Former Miss Mississippi Graduates Law School

When it comes to accomplishing goals, Jennifer Adcock goes above and beyond expectations. Adcock is a former Miss Mississippi, Miss Mississippi USA, and Top Ten Finalist in the Miss America Pageant and Miss USA Pageant. She is from Hattiesburg, Mississippi where she graduated from Southern Miss with a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors. With her scholarship money from Miss Mississippi, she has managed to attend Ole Miss Law School and plans to graduate in May of 2010 debt free and actually without ever paying for school out of her own pocket. As an active volunteer of the Oxford-Lafayette County Humane Society, she helps with the fundraising and with raising awareness for animals in need of a home. She currently fosters an abandoned and abused Shitzu named Oscar. Adcock has resided in Oxford for three years now and plans to take the Bar Exam this summer for Mississippi and Tennessee.

Green Week 2010 is underway at the University of Mississippi in honor of Earth Day, Thursday, April 22nd. With the theme "Walk the Walk", the Office of Campus Sustainability (OCS) kicked off Green Week focusing on a greener lifestyle. Going green doesn't need to end with just this week. Oxford residents can take the knowledge they learned about sustainability to become more sustainable in their daily lives.

OCS wants to encourage the community to just take one step forward to having a greener lifestyle. They also want Oxford and the University Community to gain an understanding on all green opportunities in Oxford such as, recycling, waste minimization, OUT bus, Rebel Pedals, and energy conservation. Ole Miss students have the chance to participate in a Green Foot Challenge that involves making a pledge on a green footprint outside the Student Union to take one step forward.

Google Invades Poland, Oxford Joins The Fight.

Google recently announced their plans to build and test a brand new fiber-to-the-home ISP. The service will offer speeds of up to 100 times faster than what a residential consumer could previously have access to, and it will be more affordable than existing solutions. Since the announcement, many towns and cities of all shapes and sizes have been launching various campaigns including some outrageous stunts to attract Googles attention, some have even succeeded. Oxford officially submitted their application to be one of the places for Google to test its new ISP and has begun a campaign of their own to lure in the internet giant, Fiber For Oxford. The effort is being spearheaded by local attorney Stewart Rutledge. Along with the Mayor and other city officials, the campaign is not planning to pull any stunts like other cities, but to attract Google to Oxford by just showcasing the town itself, unabridged. Many local students and residents alike are in support of Google coming town and with a nine month gap between the deadline for applications and the announcement of which cities will be chosen, campaigns will continue to push while their residents wait with fingers crossed.

Silas Reed n 'da Books- Oxford, MS

The town of Oxford, MS is home to an exploding music scene. With popular venues mostly located on the town square, there is never a quiet weekend.

The band Silas Reed n 'da Books has emerged as a local favorite. The rock/synth/soul band has spent the year defining their music. They are not a typical rock band and incorporate an electronic DJ as their opening act. The band goes out of their way to produce quality lighting and sound for their audiences. They will even supply the glow sticks and free band shirts. The band consists of University of Mississippi students and one Oxford High School sophomore, Silas' brother.
The band has established followings in many of the Oxford bars, and uniquely made ties with the Powerhouse. The band is making major strides with an upcoming show at the Oxford original Double Decker Arts Festival and a recent show at the Minerva Music Festival.
